Info for Interpreters

As you know, there is a shortage of skilled interpreters and speech-to-text providers all across the country. And yet, some of you may not be working as much as you like. If you are interested in potential employers contacting you -- whether it's for a one-time assignment, or something more on-going -- then feel free to register with NSLID. Registration is free and will be made publically available to anyone trying to find a local, qualified service professional.

We are not trying to compete with agencies. In fact, we encourage agencies to register with NSLID! Not everyone who needs an interpreter may be aware of their local agency (or agencies). However, many areas do not have agencies and it's difficult for someone needing an interpreter to find one, especially for a one-time event. We hope to make it easier.

What about qualifications?
Interpreters and speech-to-text providers come in all levels of experience, skill and expertise. Different situations will call for different skill levels. For example, an interpreter who can do a beautiful job for a graduation ceremony may not be qualified for interpreting a meeting with a lawyer. Someone who is great for medical appointments may not be the right person for a stage play. Be sure that both you and client who contacted are comfortable with the match.

NSLID does not require certification to register. However, if you have a certification (RID, NAD, State, etc.), you should include that in your profile. Furthermore, if you would like NSLID to confirm your certification (confirmed profiles are marked with a "NSLID Certified" logo), you should fax your current proof of certification to 1-888-DCRE-LAB with the cover page marked "ATTN: NSLID Confimation Dept". Please allow 5-10 working days for the certification confirmation process.

Here are some web sites that can help you learn more about the different types of certification and skill levels.

Privacy
While your information will be available to those searching this site, we will not use it for marketing, or for any other purposes other than to help you get in contact with potential employers. You can accept assignments at your own discretion, as we are not involved with or responsible for the anything beyond helping employers find you through our site.

Why is NSLID free?
As part of the mission statement at DCRE Labs, the programmers at Jinkle.Com (a DCRE subsidiary) are encouraged to:

....recognize a corporate and social responsibility to help community outreach programs, foster nascent technologies and encourage economic growth ....

This website focuses on that corporate and social responsibility to help community outreach programs by addressing a specific need within the Deaf Community: the lack of easy access to local sign language interpreters.
